3GIS criticise Swedish town's 3G permit rejection
January 10, 2003
3G Infrastructure Services (3GIS) has asked the Swedish government
to investigate the town of Trelleborg, situated on the South coast
of Sweden, after the town refused to grant building permits for
3G network mask. It could mean that operators may not be able to
reach the 99.9% coverage target by 2003 as setout in the 3G license
conditions.
3G Infrastructure Services is a joint project between Vodafone,
Hi3G and Orange, responsible for building a countrywide 3G network
in Sweden. The company complained that the building committee in
Trelleborg rejected its application to build 3G network while accepting
similar petitions from other network operators.
Trelleborg's decision was based on environmental and health concerns
such as eye sore and radiation risks.
3GIS will have network coverage in all of Sweden except Stockholm,
Goeteborg, Malmoe and Karlskrona, where both Hi3G and Vodafone plan
their own networks. Orange announced just before the start of the
year that it will pullout of its 3G operation and expects to depart
from 3GIS.
