Taiwan 3G Mobile holding talks over roaming deal
January 10, 2003
Taiwan 3G Mobile Network, formerly Taiwan PCS, is in talks with
Chunghwa Telecom and KG Telecom over the signing of mobile roaming
agreement. The agreement would strengthen the operator's coverage,
which plans to introduce 3G service in July this year.
Taiwan 3G Mobile plans to pull in at least 200,000 subscribers
by the end of this year with a network projected to reach 1.2 million
subscribers across the island. The plan will cost at least NT$12
billion (US$342.8 million. It has said that it will offer extremely
low rates when the service launches and hopes to see a return in
the third year of operation.
The company raised NT$8 billion (US$228.6 million) by September
last year.
The Taiwanese 3G operator has chosen to deploy WCDMA network and
has located 2,000 sites qualified for its base station.
The other 3G license holders are Taiwan Cellular, Asia Pacific
Broadband Wireless Communications, Chunghwa Telecom and Far EasTone.
Asia Pacific Broadband said it will offer CDMA2000 based 3G service
in the first quarter of this year.
