Sri Lanka to conduct 3G tests
January 13, 2003
Sri Lanka's telecommunications regulator has opened a tender for
a company to supply and deploy a trial 3G network in the country.
The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka says
the license would last for one year but would not be extendable.
The trial network will only cover the city of Colombo with a 5 km
radius and only one base station would be allowed with the power
of the station to be determined accordingly. At the end of the trial,
the operator is required to remove the system.
The regulator will allocate spectrum for the test based on bandwidth
required for one channel. This would be up to a maximum of 5MHz
of paired spectrum or equivalent unpaired spectrum. Operators must
deploy all necessary components and applications for the deployment
of 3G trial services. The operator should open the service to all
interested application service providers on a non-discriminatory
basis. In addition, operators are not permitted to charge prices
for the service from customers.
