3G to exploit porn
January 14, 2003
Mobile phone operators will look to soft porn in an attempt to
increase the ARPU. Rather than just downloading porn images, 3G
mobile users would in the future be able to download video clips.
The telecom industry is close to saturation and operators are looking
to existing customers to spend more.
With operators slashing billions on 3G mobile phone licenses in
the UK, operators hope new 3G services will recoup the costs spent
networks and licenses. 3G is hailed to revolutionise mobile content
by making it feasible to download high quality images and clips
and improve the overall content look. Despite promised service such
as Premiership Goal video clips, video telephony and music downloads,
operators may need to turn to porn for their source of big revenue.
Operators will be trying to sign up high-quality adult content
providers that would allow let users download images and colour
video clips such as Playboy and PocketJoy.com. Virgin Mobile and
Hutchison 3G, have already appointed dedicated advisers to look
into making money from adult content.
A code of practice will be drawn up to ensure that users under
the age of 18 do not buy adult content. Contents may be forced to
carry a classification rating system for picture and video messaging
to pave the way for adult-only mobile phone services.
IT research company Visiongain has predicted that profit from sales
of pornographic material to wireless devices could grow to $4 billion
by 2006. Industry experts believe that pornographic content will
fuel the growth of the 3G mobile market just like it has done with
the Internet.
