Cellular One only 3G applicant in Barbados
January 14, 2003
Cellular One has proposed a 3G application to the Barbados government
that would create up to 500 jobs. The American mobile company submitted
the cellular application last month, which the company describes
as the only true 3G applicant.
Cellular One is competing with AT&T Wireless, Trans World Telecoms,
Digicel, and Sunbeach Communications. Jack E. Robinson, in charge
of Cellular One's Caribbean operations, believes the company had
the best package out of the five applicants.
The other four companies has proposed GSM networks while Cellular
One has chosen CDMA. Robinson said CDMA would allow higher data
rates and speeds and "streaming video", and that Cellular One will
focus on multi media rather than considering itself as a phone company.
"We really want to focus on technology because it's just not about
cell phones, we are past that now. That is how we will differentiate
ourselves," he said.
Cellular One plans to initially spend $50 million in the Barbados
project and would only offer service once it had 100% coverage of
the island.
"We will be competitive price wise. I can guarantee you that,"
Robinson said, adding that Barbados is one of the top three markets
in the Caribbean.
