China's 3G license confusion
January 14, 2003
The Chinese telecoms regulator has rejected comments by a senior
official that 3G licenses would be awarded this year.
Reports over the weekend quoted Ma Min, a divisional head in the
Ministry of Information Industry, as saying China would probably
issue 3G licenses this year. The Ministry of Information Industry
spokesman Wang Lijian said the reports were "inaccurate" but never
confirmed that licenses would not be issued this year.
Mr Wang refused to clarify whether China would delay issuing 3G
licenses until next year or when 3G will launch.
"I have already said what I need to. What you are asking is your
interpretation," he added.
The statement from the Ministry of Information Industry has not
cleared the confusion surrounding the year 3G would launch. One
telecom official said the industry needs a clear cut statement saying
whether 3G will launch this year or not.
