Singapore Telecommunications said on Tuesday it will award the tender for its high-speed 3G mobile network by the middle of this year and hopes to launch 3G service by the end of the year. The company, Singapore's biggest operator, has short-listed three contenders, Sweden's Ericsson, Finland's Nokia, and a consortium made up of Germany's Siemens, and Japan's NEC and Itochu Corp. "SingTel will award its 3G contract by the middle of this year and offer selected 3G services by the end of this year," said SingTel Mobile chief executive Lucas Chow said. Last year, SingTel postponed the awarding of the 3G network equipment contract, citing the uncertain outlook for the technology. SingTel aims to launch its 3G wireless phone service available by year end in business districts. The operator has decided not to deploy EDGE, which is seen as a cheaper way to roll 3G services. "We have decided that EDGE will not offer SingTel an advantage," said Chow. StarHub, Singapore's No. 3 mobile operator, said it plans to test EDGE. EDGE can be added on top of existing networks and it allows networks to handle larger volumes of wireless data flow. The technology is an intermediate step to WCDMA and Singapore operators will eventually need to upgrade to WCDMA as specified in the 3G license conditions.
