Europe knocks back Hutch Australia 3G rollout
January 16, 2003
Hutchison Telecom Australia is aiming for a launch in March but
there are fears that delays of Hutchison's 3G mobile phone networks
in Europe may push back the launch in Australia back to the second
quarter of 2003.
While Hutchison Australia is still on track to offer 3G service
by the end of March, testing of handsets cannot begin until the
phase three testing (commercial launch) in Europe is complete.
Hutchison, the only Australian operator building a 3G network,
pledge to invest A$3 billion ($1.8 billion) to provide high-speed
3G services to customers in Australia.
Meanwhile, Hutchison Australia denied it requires extra funding
ahead of the 3G launch in the country following speculation that
Hutchison was running out of funds.
"There is no need for funding at the moment and no decision has
been taken," a Hutchison spokeswoman said.
Hutchison has indicated that it will offer 3G services first in
the UK and Italy before launching elsewhere. Hong Kong, Hutchison
Whampoa's main base, will not be launching until after March. Both
H3G UK and H3G Italy have no set launch date but March 3 is looking
extremely likely to be the date.
