DoCoMo helps out 3G handset makers
January 16, 2003
Japanese mobile operator NTT DoCoMo said it would provide about
40 billion yen ($339 million) in subsidies to manufacturers to develop
handsets for its 3G FOMA network. The company will pay to handset
vendors about half of the cost of developing each 3G model.
The latest move is an attempt to boost the operator's struggling
FOMA service by lowering the price of each handset and improve the
line-up of attractive handsets. High prices of previous handsets
have hampered take-up of the 3G service by consumers with only 150,000
customers signed up to 3G FOMA since its launch in October 2001.
DoCoMo's decision to subsidise development of 3G handsets would
allow the firm to acquire joint patents and give it more say in
the development of 3G handsets particularly in overseas markets.
It was reported that developing software and microprocessors for
FOMA WCDMA phones costs 10 times more than conventional handsets.
Handset vendors are facing huge cost in developing handsets for
3G but are finding it difficult to recover the costs. DoCoMo's decision
could give handset manufactures the funding it needs to shorten
development time and improve handset functions.
The first wave of subsidises will go to NEC, Fujitsu and Matsushita
Electric Industrial.
