Philips’ multimedia solution enables Wind’s new VideoMMS service
for 2.5G and 3G networks
January 17, 2003
Royal Philips Electronics announced today that its Platform4 Micro
Edition (ME) video and playback encoding software is being used
to enable the new VideoMMS service of Wind, one of Italy’s network
and service operators. The technology of Philips’ Platform4 ME multimedia
software solution is a major enhancement to Wind’s range of innovative
services to its customers.
Subscribers to the new service can capture and play video clips
on suitable handsets, which are equipped with Philips’ Platform4
ME software, and forward clips person-to-person over the Wind network
as an MMS attachment. Wind’s VideoMMS is the first service of its
kind in Italy and second in the world, and demonstrates the potential
of feature-rich multimedia delivery, using MPEG-4 technology, over
2.5G mobile networks. The service will smoothly scale to 3G networks
and further develop to include additional functions such as application-to-person
messaging of news, updates, dating and many other items.
Philips’ Platform4 ME end-to-end multimedia software solution for
next-generation mobile services, launched in October, comprises
three packages - Platform4 CamCoder ME and two video playback products,
Platform 4 Player ME and Platform4 Player Pro ME. Platform4 CamCoder
ME employs Philips’ best-in-class multimedia encoding technology
with a choice of formats, including MPEG-4, H.263 and AMR-NB audio.
Three encoding modes ensure optimal image quality, efficiency and
performance. Captured and encoded audio/video content can easily
be attached to MMS files and e-mail messages.
Commenting on the agreement, Shailendra Jain, General Manager and
COO of Philips’ MP4Net business group, said: “We are delighted to
have Wind as our first customer in Italy to employ Platform4 ME
software in a new and exciting commercial service. We are sure that
mobile network operators and service providers in other countries
will show much interest in Wind’s new VideoMMS as a model of how
consumers can be provided with a unique mobile experience.”
