KTF, South Korea's second largest mobile carrier, will review its planned rollout of 3G mobile phone services which is scheduled for commercial launch in June. Nam Joong-soo, KTF's new chief executive, said the launch of 3G WCDMA service could be held up. "At this time, we see an environment where faster mobile communication is really taking off, but these things take time," said Nam. KTF is planning to merge with its 3G arms KT ICOM which could be completed in March. The merger is to boost investment in the next generation telecommunication service. As of October 2002, KTF had signed up 50,000 customers to its CDMA2000 1X EV-DO service that includes mobile Internet, MMS and video on demand for news and sports. Bigger rival SK Telecom has said it plans to launch WCDMA service in the second half of the year. Nam said the 3G service is the most likely weapon in the battle with SK Telecom.
