TM Cellular waits for MCMC 3G decision
January 17, 2003
TM Cellular Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia
Berhad, is waiting for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia
Commission (MCMC) to decide the granting of 3G wireless spectrum.
Datuk Dr Mohamad Khir Harun, TM Cellular chief executive officer,
said the company submitted a detailed 3G business plan to the Malaysian
regulator last month.
"MCMC will come up with the decision and provide us with the spectrum
sometime at the end of this month," he said.
Telekom Malaysia and Maxis were awarded WCDMA 3G licenses from
among the five who bided in the auction from the government. Each
license was valued at RM50 million (US$13.165 million) and in addition
operators have to pay fees for each base station installed. The
two operators have access to 2 x 15 MHz paired spectrum plus 1 x
5MHz unpaired spectrum.
