J-Phone has 1,200 subscribers in just two weeks
January 20, 2003
J-Phone, Japan's third largest mobile operator, has signed up 1,200
subscribers in December to its 3G mobile phone service called "Vodafone
Global Standard".
The service launched on December 20 but was marred by a lack of
handsets that left many retailers without any stock.
A spokesman for J-Phone said it was a soft launch and the company
will gradually increase sales channel and volume of mobile handsets
for the service.
At the launch, only the NEC model was available for sale, which
could be used on J-Phone's WCDMA network in Japan and on GSM networks
in many other countries.
Rival DoCoMo added 3,000 subscribers in the month of December to
its 3G FOMA running also on a WCDMA network. This brings the total
number of FOMA subscribers to 152,000, down on its intended target.
The other 3G operator, KDDI, signed up 775,800 for its CDMA2000
1x service in December, for a total of 4,673,500 million subscribers.
J-Phone is aiming to have one million subscribers by the end of
March 2004.
