Siemens UMTS mobile phone rings for the first time at P&TLuxembourg
January 22, 2003
Luxembourg has now also taken off into the UMTS age: Only six weeks
after the mobile provider P&TLuxembourg and the Siemens Information
and Communication Mobile Group (Siemens mobile) signed a UMTS master
agreement, the first live call was transmitted to Luxembourg live
via UMTS. Lothar Pauly, Board member of Siemens Information and
Communication Mobile, and P&T General Director Marcel Gross engaged
in the call today, Wednesday, 22 January, with the UMTS telephone
U10 from Siemens and thus demonstrated the functionality of Siemens
technology. In addition, music selections, television images, and
short video files were transmitted via UMTS.
Siemens mobile will now deliver and set up the complete UMTS mobile
network of P&T in Luxembourg as sole supplier. Broadband services,
such as mobile access to the Internet and the transmission of moving
pictures, will now be available to the nearly 300,000 customers
of the LUXGSM mobile network operated by P&TLuxembourg. With more
than 100 percent GSM customers, Luxembourg has one of the highest
market penetration rates worldwide.
