HK may grant further 3G licenses
January 28, 2003
The consultation process of future mobile licenses in Hong Kong
may be move forward to this year which could result in the awarding
of 3G licenses to the two operators without the high-speed licenses.
The Office of the Telecommunications Authority (OFTA) granted four
third generation licenses to Hutchison Whampoa, CSL, SmarTone and
Sunday Communications. Peoples and New World Mobility were left
without licenses in the 2001 auction.
The OFTA may also discuss the early renewal of 2G mobile licenses
with operators, which is to expire in 2006 with consultation on
the renewal planned for 2005.
Director-General of Telecommunications Anthony Wong expects Hong
Kong to start 3G services this year. He anticipates 3G handsets
to be available in the next two months and mass production to begin
at least six months later.
Hutchison has previously said it would rollout 3G services in Hong
Kong only after the first quarter. Peoples recently said it would
upgrade its mobile network to EDGE having already deployed GPRS.
