Mobilkom to expand 3G coverage
January 28, 2003
Mobilkom Austria CEO said the operator will extend its 3G mobile
coverage to more than half of Austria's population by year-end.
Boris Nemsic said the operator, which launched its 3G network last
September, will definitely have more than 50% coverage and maybe
even 60%.
Nemsic expressed nationwide coverage would be key to the commercial
success of the applications it will launch in the first six months
of this year.
Mobilkom had only 25% network coverage of the population at the
start of the launch which then extended to 40% by the end of last
year. Nemsic explained Austria's topography will make 3G coverage
expansion more difficult.
The Austrian operator spent €72 million deploying its 3G network
over the past two years. Current 3G services include real time audio
and video streaming of news. Mobilkom plans to introduce gaming
in the future and hope to improve interoperability between 2.5G
and 3G networks.
"Inter-working between 2G, 2.5G and 3G will be in place by the
end of the year, so a lot of data services will be available on
the 3G network but also on 2.5G," he said.
Mobilkom Austria announced earlier this month a partnership agreement
with Vodafone that includes cooperation in product development,
marketing and roaming. Vodafone and Mobilkom customers would be
able to use each other's mobile network. Subscribers in Vodafone's
Japanese unit J-Phone can also use their dual mode 3G handsets in
Austria.
