Qualcomm congratulates KDDI on the launch of BREW for 3G handsets
January 29, 2003
Qualcomm Incorporated congratulates KDDI Corporation, Japan's second
largest wireless operator, on the company's launch of its BREW download
service. KDDI's enhanced wireless application service now gives
subscribers the ability to personalize their mobile phones with
an array of applications developed for Qualcomm's Binary Runtime
Environment for Wireless (BREW) platform.
"KDDI's dedication to deliver compelling and easy-to-use download
services to both its subscribers and enterprise customers exemplifies
the company's leadership in the wireless industry," said Dr. Paul
E. Jacobs, group president, Qualcomm Wireless & Internet Group.
"By deploying BREW-based services, KDDI strengthens its position
in the market and demonstrates its commitment to quality data services."
"This is the next step in providing our subscribers with the most
useful, entertaining and robust data services available," said Yasuhiko
Ito, executive managing officer, operating officer, KDDI Solution
Business Sector. "We anticipate that our new download service will
have tremendous traction with our customers. This new service enables
users to experience the latest in cutting-edge wireless data services
and customize their devices with a variety of applications."
Applications will be offered on a subscription basis as well as
per download for a fee. There will be a variety of price points
and some applications will be offered free of charge. As part of
the company's BREW- enabled handset line-up, KDDI will offer the
Toshiba A5304T handset. The device line-up will also include four
au Movie Keitai models with built-in cameras, bringing KDDI's offering
of CDMA2000 1X-compatible handsets to 15 models.
Deployments of the BREW solution continue as operators throughout
the world join KDDI, Verizon Wireless and ALLTEL in the United States
and South Korea's KTF in commercializing BREW-based services. U.S.
Cellular has launched a BREW user trial, and China Unicom announced
its plans to launch BREW-based services in China. Thirty BREW-enabled
handset models are already available to consumers worldwide, and
30 device manufacturers have indicated their interest in the BREW
platform.
Qualcomm's BREW platform is a thin application execution environment
that provides an open, standard platform for wireless devices. The
BREW platform is part of a complete, end-to-end solution for wireless
applications development, device configuration, application distribution,
and billing and payment.
