Malaysia gov to give 3G approval this week
January 29, 2003
The two Malaysian 3G license holders Telekom Malaysia and Maxis
Communications will get approval from the government by Friday to
build next generation mobile networks said an industry source. But
the approval would come with limitations because both operators
did not fully meet regulatory standards.
Malaysia plans to introduce 3G services in 2004. Therefore, the
government will approve both operators' business plans, as it does
not want to delay the rollout.
Analysts say the government's decision to impose conditions is
due to both companies' reluctance to invest heavily into the unproven
3G technology. The government expects a modest launch next year
but it may be more than what Telekom and Maxis are willing to spend.
Maxis is the biggest mobile phone operator in Malaysia with a 34%
share of the mobile market. Telekom has a near monopoly over fixed-line
connections. Ericsson, Motorola and Alcatel are expected to bid
for the contracts to supply Maxis and Telekom with network equipment.
Each operator paid around US$13 million for 3G licenses back in
July 2002.
