Third quarter 3G launch for Deutsche Telekom
January 30, 2003
The head of Deutsche Telekom has said it would launch 3G mobile
services in Germany in the third quarter of the year.
"Starting with the third quarter, we will start the commercial
launch," said Chief Executive Kai-Uwe Ricke. "Right at the start,
3G will be available in about 200 German cities," he added.
Ricke also said investors could snap up 3G licenses from one of
the failed German 3G mobile license holders. Both Quam and MobilCom
have abandoned their 3G deployment after investors stop funding
the project.
"I would recommend letting those licences disappear in a vault,
but my feeling is that it won't come to this," Ricke said
In 2000, six operators paid around US$7,600,000,000 each for 3G
mobile licenses, those being Vodafone's Mannesmann , mmO2, KPN's
E-Plus, Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile, Quam and MobilCom. Under German
regulations, existing licenses are not permitted to buy licenses
from failed ventures.
