SingTel to set new 3G trial date

Singapore Telecommunications has said the consumer trials for its 3G mobile service were delayed because of handset issues. The company was less specific on the type of problem but said customers during the Christmas "would be out of town" was a factor.

SingTel had originally planned to start the trial in December which would have lasted one month. It will now look for a new date for the trial and could push back the commercial launch that was planned in the first quarter of this year.

"There are some 3G handset issues that need to be resolved. We are looking at an alternative date to start the 3G customer trial and will make an announcement on this in due course," said SingTel spokeswoman Andrienne Tho.

Other 3G operators globally had handset issues including a shortage of handsets, incompatibility between 3G handsets and 2G networks and software glitches in the handsets.
