SmarTone aim for second-half 3G rollout
January 8, 2004
Hong Kong operator SmarTone Telecommunications said on Wednesday it will
launch 3G mobile services in the region in the second half of the year.
The company is one of four 3G license holders in Hong Kong, including
Hutchison who will commerce the next generation service this month.
SmarTone gave no specific dates but it intends to have dual mode handsets
available for consumers.
"SmarTone has had no delays or deferments to its plans to launch 3G,"
Chief Executive Douglas Li said. "We will launch when dual mode handsets
are ready and more choices are available, which looks like it would happen
in the second half of the year."
"To launch the service, we need to have handsets capable of working on
both the 2.5G and 3G networks," said Li and expects handset costs to be
similar to Hutchison's NEC c616 3G handsets.
SmarTone had originally planned to invest HK$1.5 billion to rolling out
3G but the price of 3G equipment have fallen, therefore lowering the costs
for the company. Li said SmarTone will spend HK$500 million a year on
both its 3G and ongoing 2G operations, but added, "when we rollout 3G
operations, we won't need to spend as much on 2G".
