3G could accelerate growth in child porn

January 13, 2004

The next generation of mobile phones would trigger an even bigger rise in child pornography. A report by children's charity NCH says child porn crimes is 15 times higher than in 1988 because of the internet and new internet mobile phones will increase this figure further.

In the past, paedophiles who use the internet can be traced but the use of mobile phones will make tracking even harder. A majority of mobile phone users in the UK are prepaid users and do not have to register their details with the mobile companies.

John Carr, the charity's internet consultant, said the increase in child sex crimes was mainly due to the use of the internet and added, "The internet is about to go mobile, and that could make many things more difficult to prevent or detect".

With fixed internet, such as computers, parents were encouraged to supervise their children's net activities. Carr said the move to mobile internet would make parents monitoring their children more difficult.

The report also revealed 549 people were charged or cautioned with child porn offences in 2002, compared to just 35 in 1988.

Chatrooms is one of the potentials paedophiles use to meet their victims. Some of the new mobile phones have popular chat programs, such as MSN Messenger, installed on them, making chatrooms more readily available.

The transfer of images via mobiles will increase because of camera phones and new video handsets. It would be difficult to spot camera phone misuse as it would be difficult to tell whether someone is taking a picture or dialling on their mobile phone.
