Hutchison begin 3G countdown in Hong Kong
January 14, 2004
Hutchison Whampoa Chairman Li Ka-shing said the company will begin 3G
mobile operations in Hong Kong within a week, according to the Dow Jones.
Li, speaking at the annual dinner Tuesday for his property group Cheung
Kong, said the new NEC 616 handset will be available in Hong Kong within
a week. Cheung Kong holds 49.9% of Hutchison.
"We are confident that this revolutionary service will create new excitement
in the market for multimedia mobile communications, and that with the
continuous improvement in technology, 3G will soon become a necessity
in our modern life," Li said.
Hutchison holds several 3G licenses globally and launched it first 3G
services in Italy and Britain last March. It had planned to begin service
in Hong Kong last summer but compatibility problems forced the company
to rip out installed base stations and replace them with new ones. Its
failure to launch before Christmas was due to its handset suppliers unable
to deliver enough phones on time.
Hutchison's 3G worldwide subscribers for last year were less than expected.
The forecasted 1 million subscribers in each the UK and Italy market ended
up short with 210,000 subscribers in the UK and 340,000 in Italy.
Li also said that the NEC 616 will be launched in other markets within
3 weeks.
