Hutchison to fund 3G losses by selling phone business
January 15, 2004
Hutchison Whampoa is planning to sell its fixed-line phone operation
to an affiliate that could raise more than $500 million to offset losses
on its European 3G mobile phone venture.
Bloomberg News reported sources familiar with the plan said the company
will sell Hutchison Global Communications to Vanda Systems Communications,
a software business, in return for Vanda shares and convertible debt.
The sale will increase Hutchison's 37% hold in Vanda. Bloomberg said
the deal could be designed to deliver profits at a time when Hutchison
has to absorb losses from a $23 billion, investment in high-speed mobile
services in 10 countries.
The sale would allow the fixed-line business gain local stock exchange
listing through Vanda, after plans to conduct an initial public share
sale failed.
Hutchison plans to sell Vanda's shares in the market to ensure public
investors own a sufficient holding to maintain the company's listing,
but still hold on to more than half of the subsidiary, the sources said.
Hutchison's 3G mobile services posted losses of $3.9 billion before interest
and tax for the first half of 2003.
