3 Australia below 3G sales target
January 18, 2004
Hutchison's 3G mobile operation in Australia fell short of projected
sales. The Australian paper obtained staff memos saying that by December
20, the 57 company-owned "3" stores had reached only 24% of the sales
target. The figure does not include sales through other dealers.
One memo read, "As at close of business Sunday we are at 24% of our December
target; although a long way from where we want to be, it is an increase
on where we were last week."
During the Christmas period, Hutchison launched a 30% off promotion that
ended in early January. A memo said the promotion had a positive effect
on the sales. A Hutchison spokeswoman admitted sales performance was below
expectations but the figures mentioned in the memo were not good indicators.
"The sales of 3G handsets were good but not as strong as expected," she
said.
The Hutchison spokeswoman said the operator has not received any replacement
for the NEC e606, but expects the new NEC 616 handsets to arrive within
the next two months. Hutchison has not confirmed they will sell the SonyEricsson
Z1010 but industry sources believe the handset will be out in the first
quarter.
