TD-SCDMA proceeding well
January 19, 2004
The effort to make TD-SCDMA become a commercial reality will gather pace
this year. The president of Datang Telecom, Zhou Huang, said in an interview
with China Daily that development of China's homegrown standard is progressing
successfully.
"This year, we will make enhanced efforts on the commercialisation and
industrialisation of the standard," said Zhou. "The development of TD-SCDMA-related
testing and equipment is currently proceeding very well."
Datang has two solutions for producing TD-SCDMA chips in handsets. The
first solution is to improve current mobile phone chips to make them support
the TD-SCDMA standard. The other solution is to develop new chips for
the TD-SCDMA system, something which will become a reality in July, Zhou
said.
According to Zhou, the large scale 3G commercialisation will likely happen
in one and a half year's time. This allows time for TD-SCDMA to catch
up with the two dominant 3G standards, WCDMA and CDMA2000. Zhou expects
a large scale commercial experimental TD-SCDMA network to be completed
in the fourth quarter of this year.
He said funding the development of TD-SCDMA was not a concern and is
planning to attract more foreign investment. Some of the talks are nearing
the final stages.
"Government support has reflected the great market potential for the
TD-SCDMA, which will serve as a demonstration for foreign investors,"
Zhou said.
China has yet to award 3G mobile licenses and it lead to claims the Chinese
Government is waiting for the maturing of TD-SCDMA. Zhou denied the rumours
by saying, "It is because the telecom operator is not ready to find a
model to earn profits from 3G so far, delaying their commercial take-off."
"Personally, I think it is most appropriate to issue 3G licences in the
first half of 2005," he added.
