RealNetworks provides streaming on TeliaSonera 3G network
January 26, 2004
RealNetworks, creator of digital media services and software, and TeliaSonera, the telecommunications group in the Nordic and Baltic regions, announced that TeliaSonera has selected RealNetworks' Helix mobile platform to power streaming delivery of audio and video content to GPRS and 3G network mobile subscribers in Finland and Sweden.
"TeliaSonera has long been a driving force in its commitment to providing a seamless service experience to users of GPRS and 3G networks, as well as broadband. With support for both standard 3GPP compliant formats as well as RealAudio and RealVideo, RealNetworks' Helix Universal mobile server and Helix Mobile Producer were the automatic choice for TeliaSonera," said Lee Joseph, general manager, Mobile Products and Services, RealNetworks. "With the addition of streaming live and on-demand multimedia content services to their mobile offering, TeliaSonera mobile customers will be among the first in Europe to have mobile multimedia content services directly on their mobile devices."
"Video and audio streaming are key components in the emerging new mobile services. The Helix mobile platform itself is invisible for mobile users and content providers, but it enables TeliaSonera to create a new class of easy-to-use services," said Mr. Jussi Komonen, Development Manager for Streaming Technology with TeliaSonera Finland MediaLab.
RealNetworks' multi-format Helix Universal mobile solutions enable operators to deliver live and on-demand Internet audio and video content directly to consumers' mobile devices enabled with the RealPlayer for mobile or other multimedia-enabled applications. The Helix mobile platform, comprised of the Helix Universal mobile server and Helix Mobile Producer, provides TeliaSonera with the software foundation to deliver compelling multimedia content.
With over 11 million mobile subscribers, TeliaSonera is the largest mobile operator in Sweden and Finland, the second largest operator in Norway, and the fourth largest operator in Denmark.
