T-Mobile Germany ahead of 3G coverage target

January 30, 2004

German telecom giant T-Mobile said its 3G mobile phone network would cover half of the German population this year. This means the operator could be ahead of the mandate population coverage stated in the 3G license requirements by one year. The licenses in Germany require operators to cover 50% of the population by the end of 2005.

T-Mobile chief Rene Obermann said its UMTS network has around 40% coverage at the moment.

The operator said early this month that customers with their own UMTS handsets would be able to try its 3G network but this is not considered an official launch. T-Mobile activated its SIM cards to enable customers to use the 3G network.

Two of the six 3G license winners have failed to complete the first network coverage requirement of 25% by the end of 2003. Mobilcom has handed back its licence while the German telecoms regulator is looking to withdraw the license from Quam.
