Polish operator awards 3G network contract

January 11, 2005 - source: BWCS

To the surprise of virtually no-one, Polish mobile operator Centertel has signed up Nokia to supply 3G core infrastructure. Nokia had supplied the original test equipment to Centertel. The Warsaw-based mobile company plans to award a second network equipment tender later this month with Canadian vendor Nortel widely tipped to get the gig.

According to Centertel's president, Slawomir Skrodzki, quoted in Polish newspapers yesterday, "The management intends to choose two UMTS technology suppliers." He went on, "our commercial UMTS offer will enter the market at the turn of the second quarter 2005. By the end of the year it will cover the largest cities." However, according to business newspaper, Puls Biznesu, Centertel will not raise its investment in 2005 above the 2003 and 2004 levels of Plz1 billion (£172 million).
