T-Mobile USA to jump to 3G HSDPA

January 16, 2005

T-Mobile USA is looking likely to abandon the roll out of first generation 3G mobile phone networks and move directly to the upgraded HSDPA technology.

"We will probably go directly to an upgraded version called HSDPA," said T-Mobile USA Chief Executive Robert Dotson at an investor conference.

In the meantime, the company will focus on implementing EDGE technology in the coming quarters, which allows data to be transferred at speeds close to first generation 3G networks.

Dotson noted that it will likely take a couple of years before T-Mobile will offer 3G services in the US.

T-Mobile USA reiterated that it expects to reach 20 million subscribers by the end of 2005 compared with 16.3 million at the end of the third quarter of 2004.
