DoCoMo announces nine million 3G customers

January 24, 2005 - source: BWCS

NTT DoCoMo's latest report on its burgeoning FOMA 3G services shows that it has over nine million customers signed up to it. The Japanese giant, which launched its 3G service in October 2001, after a six month delay due to technical incompatibilities, took until October 2003 to reach the one million customer mark.

Since that auspicious date however, DoCoMo's FOMA service has shown more accelerated growth. By March of last year the company had registered over three million 3G customers. Four months later it was able to report that it had over five million users of its FOMA service.

Figures from the Japanese Telecommunications Carriers Association, for the end of December 2004 show that the number of mobile phone customers in the country stood at 85.5 million. Of this total 57.9 million use the conventional personal digital cellular service, the remainder subscribe to 3G services, from either Vodafone, KDDI's "au" subsidiary, or DoCoMo's FOMA.
