Indonesian 3G Off (Temporarily)

The government in Indonesia has postponed the award of 3G mobile phone licences for a second time, following further delays in the issuing of tender documents. However, a spokesman for the administration was adamant that the tenders will definitely be issued next month.
The Jakarta administration had hoped to award next generation mobile phone licences last year, but faced delays with the proposed bid documents. Once the paper-work is finally prepared, the long awaited auction will allow incumbent mobile phone operators to bid for 3G licences.
Indonesia's three largest mobile phone operators, PT Telekomunikasi Selular (Telkomsel), PT Indosat Tbk and PT Excelcomindo Pratama, are expected to join the tender. Telkomsel, 65% owned by PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Tbk , and Indosat conducted test runs for the implementation of the new technology last year and are ready to commit funds for its development.
