Watch Traffic Jams on your Mobile
January 12, 2006 - source: BWCS
CCTV coverage of the UK's highways and byways will soon be made available to mobile phone users in a bid to ease traffic congestion and allow motorists to better plan their routes. A trial of the new service is currently being carried out by the UK government's Highways Agency.
The video footage from roadside CCTV cameras will be funneled to motorists via a system set up by MX Data, which provides map-based traffic and travel information to the mobile service industry.
According to the Highways Agency the service will be available to customers of Orange, O2, Vodafone and T-Mobile. It added that the trial will start with 100 cameras on selected motorways and will extend to the full Highways Agency CCTV network by the end of the year.
