Foreign compaines to have bigger roles to play in China

Foreign players are likely to have a bigger role to play in China telecom market with the introduction of 3G mobile communication network, stated a telecom expert.

The five-year protection tenure of the telecom industry granted by the WTO to China as a new entrant is over. Now the air of uncertainties over the entry of for overseas investors is gradually clearing away, stated a Beijing Professor, Zeng Jianqiu. 2006 was proclaimed an important year for overseas players to access the China telecom market.

In 2001, China became a part of WTO basic telecom agreement that means that it will follow policies related regarding regulations, scope of telecommunications services, restrictions on foreign exchange, Internet trade and satellite telecommunications service.

Telecom operators in China were under tremendous pressure from the influx of foreign investments then. However, the circumstances were not as tough as thought. In fact, the China telecom sector has grown phenomenally in terms of technical advancement, service content and the metamorphosis of telecom firms. As against the China's schedule for opening its telecom sector, the success achieved by overseas telecom biggies in China has been significant.

According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, a leading market research company, "with the improvement of network construction, more and more 3G subscribers will get access to the market, and in coming year 3G subscribers will attain 40% of the overall subscriber base. As per estimates, investment in 3G will cross 90 Billion ¥ by the end of 2008."
