SK Telecom offers VOD on cdma2000 networkdate: July 12, 2001 SK Telecom took its cdma2000-1x network to a new level by offering commercial wireless online services in 23 Korean cities. Subscribers now have access to video on demand (VOD) and audio music and other multimedia services via their cellular phones, reported by The Korea Economic Daily. "This is the world's first commercial service that offers motion pictures through a wireless handset without the need for peripheral devices. Only a cdma2000-1x network is being used," said Man-won Chung, chief of Wireless Internet Division at SK Telecom. "This new service has placed SK Telecom in the lead of the future wireless Internet market." The multimedia offerings include video, news reports and music downloads through SK Telecom's n.TOP wireless online service. Specifically, the contents are divided into seven different categories: broadcasts/entertainment, animated features, movies, educational/religious programs, news, music, and audio books. The VOD service is available for a usage fee of $.23-.31 per movie, plus a call charge of $.002 per 512-byte packet. The company hopes to launch its WCDMA 3G based service early next year in time for the 2002 Football World Cup. It plans to beam live short video clips of football matches to 3G handsets. During the month of July, the company plans to extend its nation-wide coverage to 79 cities.
