One step closer to 3G in Moscow

date: July 18, 2001 - source: Lucent

Lucent Technologies and Moscow Cellular Communications (MCC) today announced the companies will introduce a next-generation wireless network that will enable MCC to offer high-capacity voice and high-speed data services over its current licensed spectrum in the 450 MHz band. Lucent will supply its International Mobile Telecommunications - Multi-Carrier (IMT-MC) 450 solution to help MCC evolve its analog network to a higher capacity digital network - the first step toward a 3G network.

IMT-MC was approved by the ITU as one of the IMT-2000 standards for 3G mobile networks together with UMTS. While operating in two different bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, IMT-MC and UMTS are comparable technologies that support similar services. For NMT-450 operators, IMT-MC 450 is a first phase on the road to 3G networks.

Under terms of the agreement, the first phase of the project calls for Lucent to provide equipment for a digital pilot network in Moscow and the Moscow region that is based on the IMT-MC standard. Once testing of the pilot network is successfully completed, work will begin on a full-scale digital network in the Moscow region that will help MCC subscribers migrate from analog service to next-generation digital services.

"Our agreement with Lucent means that we are able to move towards the next generation of mobile telecommunications in line with other international and domestic operators. And, to some extent, even ahead of them," said Yury Khromov, MCC managing director.

The IMT-MC standard enables allocated spectrum in the 450 MHz band to serve more subscribers with better quality than current analog technology. The digital technology also consumes less power, enabling the development of smaller mobile devices with longer battery life, and has the potential to support data rates of up to 144 kbps, nearly two times faster than the highest-speed dial-up computer modems now on the market.
