Vodafone to delay 3G rolloutdate: July 20, 2001 Vodafone, the world's largest mobile phone network operator said the launch of its next generation 3G mobile phone service could slip into 2003 due to a potential handsets shortage. Chris Gent, chairman of Vodafone in an interview with the Wall Street Journal blamed the potential shortage of the 'always-on' high-speed 3G handsets from manufacturers were the caused for slow rollout. Vodafone was targeted to launch its commercial service second half of 2002 and is now cutting back on the roll-put of 3G network infrastructure in the UK and Europe countries. It now plans to build 750 base-stations in the UK by the end of the year instead of the initial 1200 planned.
