Telecel Vodafone Signs UMTS Network Agreement With Nortel Networksdate: July 23, 2001 - source: Nortel Networks Telecel, a Vodafone affiliate, has signed a two-year agreement with Nortel Networks to supply 3G UMTS equipment and services in Portugal. Nortel Networks will supply an end-to-end UMTS solution based on its industry-leading wireless access and packet core solutions. These solutions use Nortel Networks extensive experience in CDMA networks and packet switching technology. The Telecel agreement reinforces Nortel Networks leadership position in the 3G market in Europe, and in Iberia where Nortel Networks has now secured four UMTS awards. It also extends Nortel Networks relationship with the Vodafone Group. Airtel and Omnitel, also Vodafone affiliates, have selected Nortel Networks as a 3G infrastructure supplier as well. Nortel Networks has now announced nine UMTS awards in Europe, including incumbent operators BT, T-Mobile, One 2 One, max.mobil, Telecel, Omnitel and Airtel and 'greenfield' providers Xfera and ONI WAY, as well as AT&T Wireless in the United States.
