LGE Develops ASIC Commercial Modem for 3G UMTS Systemdate: July 24, 2001 - source: LG Electronics As UMTS is gearing up for service commencement in 2002, LG Electronics succeeded in developing a core ASIC modem for base station, Node-B. Following the development of a commercial system for UMTS in last year for the first time in Korea, LGE completed the development of the ASIC commercial modem, the most important part of the system. Using the chip, LGE successfully tested voice and packet-based communications for the first time in Korea. Development of the ASIC commercial modem for Node-B of UMTS system shows up the technological strength of Korean telecommunication industry in terms of UMTS system development by another notch, while securing the technology to develop commercial modems, which has been the core of UMTS system development. The new ASIC modem supports the latest 3GPP W-CDMA standard-the international standard. It supports 48 channels for downlink 4 channels for uplink, 384 Kbps transmission speed, 2 antenna diversities and 6 sectors. The gate complexity of the chip is as high as approximately 4.5 million gates. LGE secured Node-B incorporating the ASIC commercial modem and completed developing basic features of all network devices required for voice and video communications and interoperability with the Internet. LGE will actively expand its sphere of operations to foreign countries including Italy where UMTS system installed with LGE technology are currently under trial.
