Regulator says 3G network sharing may allow in Hollanddate: July 26, 2001 - source: Dutch regulators have said that operators could be allowed to form alliances for network construction providing that competition was not hampered. A joint statement from the telecoms watchdog OPTA, competition regulator NMa and the transport ministry, announcing the launch of a draft document on network sharing, said: "UMTS licence holders may co-operate, as long as there remains sufficient competition among them." Previous concerns by OPTA had been that this practice could lead to both competition and innovation being impeded. It has now been decided by the Dutch authorities that parts of 3G networks could be built in partnership as long as each party could push forward the network independently in accordance with its own vision. Although the authorities would not permit shared use of frequencies and core network. The statement went on to say: "NMa, OPTA and the transport ministry believe that co-operation in building UMTS networks can contribute to a faster development of UMTS." Those parties interested have until 17th August 17 to react to the draft and then a decision will be made.
