SFR chooses Siemens/NEC as one of the main suppliers for its 3G networkdate: July 28, 2001 - source: The French mobile operator Cegetel Group has chosen Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (IC Mobile) and NEC as one of its main suppliers for its 3G mobile network. Siemens IC Mobile and NEC will initially supply a complete UMTS solution for the greater Lille region in Northern France consisting of a core network (for integration with the existing networks), a radio network and UMTS applications. Additionally UMTS/3G handsets will be supplied. Test runs of the network are planned for the beginning of 2002. Siemens IC Mobile will also open a development center for UMTS/3G applications in France. UMTS/3G applications enable new multimedia and data services like location based services and mobile Internet access. The contract comes after the successful opening of the Monaco Telecom UMTS/3G network on June 29, 2001 when the first voice calls were made over the UMTS/3G network. The UMTS/3G network of Monaco Telecom is also supplied by Siemens and NEC. Siemens has supplied the Cegetel Group since 1990 with equipment for mobile and fixed-line telephony. NEC provides SFR with GSM equipment since the year 2000.
