Swiss planning laws delaying 3G rolloutdate: July 30, 2001 - source: Sunrise has become the first Swiss operator to cast doubts on the end-2002 deadline for the launch of commercial 3G services in its home market. According to reports in the Berner Zeitung newspaper, Kim Frimer, CEO of Sunrise, believes that it may not be possible to stick to this timetable and does not expect to meet the December 2002 deadline for launching its UMTS network. The executive is further quoted as saying that under current regulations it may not be possible to even build a 3G network in many Swiss cities. Sunrise was one of four operators awarded a licence to offer next generation mobile phone services in Switzerland following last December's auction. The other licensees: Orange, Swisscom Mobile (backed by Vodafone) and Team 3G (Telefónica) have not yet announced any delays. Under the terms of the original licence awards the operators have until 2004 to achieve 50% coverage of the Swiss market and are due to launch commercial services by the end of 2002.
