J-Phone to give FOMA a hard timedate: July 30, 2001 Chris Gent, Vodafone Chief Executive, speaking to the press said it is a challenging NTT DoCoMo' FOMA service, which is trying to turn itself into a global player like Vodafone by leveraging the success its has had with its iMode service. FOMA is the brand name for NTT DoCoMo's new 3G service based on the W-CDMA mobile communications standard. Gent said there was much to learn in Japan's wireless market, where nearly two out of every three of Japan's 63.39 million Web users access the Internet on its mobile phones. "Our primary interest is to improve the performance of J-Phone and give DoCoMo a hard time in this market," Gent said, adding that he wanted to simplify J-Phone's billing structure as well. J-Phone currently has 7.48-million users who use the net using wireless phones. DoCoMo, which dominates nearly 60 percent of Japan's mobile user base, has been expanding its global presence and spent 1.8 trillion yen last year buying minority stakes in wireless operators overseas including Mobile China and Hutchison 3G. Both will compete for users when 3G wireless services are launched. Gent laid out his plans for 3G services in Japan, saying Vodafone will move quickly to introduce dual-band phones capable of working on existing network areas as well as the new 3G networks that will be built.
