Optimus Selects Nortel Networks to Deliver UMTS Network in Portugaldate: July 30, 2001 Optimus, a subsidiary of Sonae.com and France Telecom, has selected Nortel Networks to supply Wireless Internet infrastructure equipment and services for build out of its 3G UMTS network in Portugal. Nortel Networks will provide Optimus with radio infrastructure equipment in Northern Portugal, including Nortel Networks e-mobility Internet Base Transceiver Station (BTS) and Internet Radio Network Controller. Antonio Casanova, chief executive officer of Optimus, said, "Nortel Networks has proven leadership in the global UMTS business and in CDMA technology . . ." Nortel Networks has now announced 12 UMTS awards, including 11 in Europe -- from incumbent operators BT Cellnet, T-Mobile, One 2 One, max.mobil, Telecel, Omnitel, Airtel, Optimus, and Mobilkom; and 'greenfield' providers Xfera and ONI WAY -- and one from AT&T Wireless in the US. Nortel Networks 3G solutions are designed to help operators enhance profitability by enabling personalized multimedia services over a true Quality of Service network. This will be one of the keys to improving the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), and will be delivered over leading carrier platforms such as e-mobility Internet BTS, Nortel Networks Passport 15000 Multiservice Switch, and Nortel Networks Shasta Broadband Services Node. Based on CDMA technology, UMTS is designed to provide high-speed access to information, e-mail, real-time video and other Wireless Internet services through a variety of personal, portable devices.
