Manx Telecom demonstrates mobile Internet over its 3G networkdate: July 31, 2001 - source: http://www.bt3gshowcase.com The advent of high speed mobile Internet has moved a step closer on the Isle of Man as Manx Telecom, a wholly owned subsidiary of BTwireless, successfully completed the Island's first data call over its 3G network. For such a call, data is broken up into individual data packets as opposed to circuit switched connections that provide a constant line between two subscribers. The Internet Protocol (IP) packet data call provides the customer with high speed data rate access to the Internet and other data applications. On the Isle of Man the Internet was accessed over the 3G network allowing the online browsing of HTML pages. Mark Briers, Director at Manx Telecom, said: "The call opens the door to some of the most exciting applications in our suite of 3G services on a mobile phone, like watching your football team score its winning goal; finding and booking a hotel; checking e-mail whilst travelling to business meetings; and playing games with people across the world. Today, along with our project partners NEC and Siemens, we have taken real steps towards realising the potential of mobile multimedia." The call was made on the actual operational network and used a NEC commercial 3G handset connected to a laptop computer. Mark Briers used the call to surf the latest news from the qualifying stage at last weekend's German Grand Prix in Hockenheim. Dr. Valentin Chapero-Rueda, President of Networks within the Siemens Information and Communication Mobile Group said: "We are very proud to announce this important step today exactly one year after the beginning of the auctioning of the 3G/UMTS licences in Germany. Following the first voice call on May 15 and the first video call on June 27 this first data call marks one of the final milestones in implementing the 3G network on the Isle of Man and demonstrates that UMTS is becoming reality." Gary Head, NEC 3G Project Director agrees: "The data applications that 3G enables are what really differentiate the technology from its predecessors. Packet switching is a highly efficient way of transferring data and now that we have passed this milestone we are on the way to delivering a mobile Internet service that will change the way we work and live". In addition, Manx Telecom has implemented an integrated billing system this week, which will eventually allow customers an ability to receive itemised bills that cover all of the services that the company provides, from fixed line rental to advanced 3G services. The system eliminates the need for multiple bills and customers will be able to view and pay for their bills online. They will also be able to check the status of their bill on their mobile via WAP or by logging on to the Manx Telecom website. The system is now live for the GSM based services and will be extended to 3G and fixed networks in due course.
