SmarTone may launch 3G in late 2003date: July 3, 2002 SmarTone will launch its HK 3G network no earlier than 3Q03, CEO Douglas Li tells SCMP, stressing that mobile data services are still in their infancy and that there are "many lessons yet to be learnt." While this means Hutchison's 4Q02 rollout will beat SmarTone by considerable margin, one analyst says only small-scale services likely before 2004 anyway, and demand for new services will depend on availability and prices of handsets. SmarTone won a 3G licence in Hong Kong in September 2001. The Company's major shareholders include Sun Hung Kai Properties (29.36%) and British Telecommunications (20.75%).
