Sprint Set to Delay 1X Switch-ondate: July 3, 2002 - source: BWCS It has emerged that US wireless carrier Sprint PCS has delayed the launch of its new high-speed cdma2000 1X service until 10 August. Although no firm launch date had been announced, the mobile firm had been expected to switch on its new next-generation network early this month. However, Philip Christopher, president and CEO of equipment manufacturer Audiovox, let slip details of the delay during a conference call to discuss his company’s financial results. He said: “Sprint ... effectively postponed their 3G introduction from July to August 10th. On August 10th they will be introducing the so-called 3G products.” Sprint has not commented officially on Christopher’s statement, although an unnamed spokesperson told Reuters that it would be a mistake to link Sprint’s introduction of cdma2000 1X and the launch of a new Audiovox handset. Audiovox is due to release its new Thera handheld computer on 10 August and this will be available to customers of Sprint’s high-speed data service. Several of Sprint’s rivals in the US wireless market have already introduced advanced services which offer faster data transmission. Market leader Verizon Wireless has introduced its own cdma2000 1X service, while AT&T Wireless has launched services based on GPRS.
