DoCoMo to setup holding company to promote 3Gdate: July 23, 2002 NTT DoCoMo said on Tuesday it would set up a holding company to promote its i-mode and third-generation (3G) services in Europe. The new firm would serve as European headquarters for NTT DoCoMo, whose expansion overseas is crucial given slowing growth and intense competition at home. DoCoMo said it would convert its London-based subsidiary to a holding company, named DoCoMo Europe Ltd, in September. Its three other European subsidiaries would become wholly owned units of the new holding firm. After launching its i-mode service in 1999 to deliver news and entertainment to mobile phones in Japan, DoCoMo took minority stakes in several foreign wireless carriers to promote its technology and lay the foundations for 3G services overseas. In a bid to trump the success of i-mode, DoCoMo became the world's first operator of 3G services last October, offering video conferencing and fast downloading from the Internet onto mobile phones.
