Slovakia issues licensesdate: July 23, 2002 The Slovak telecoms office has finally issued 3G licenses to the country's two incumbent operators, Orange and Eurotel. The regulatory authority is to continue talks with Profinet.sk, a Slovakian ISP, that is interested in the combined GSM/UMTS license that is on offer. Robert Chvatal, CEO of EuroTel Bratislava, said: "We are very happy for having received a UMTS license in this exciting market. Moving forward, we are confident that this license will enable us to provide the highest level of service with the latest technology to our customers while ensuring a steady cash flow for the future operations of EuroTel." The UMTS licenses will be valid for 20 years and will cost each of the two providers EUR34.5m. The combined GSM/UMTS license is expected to cost EUR35m, should it be sold. Orange was formerly known as Globtel and Eurotel is indirectly owned by DT.
