3G is a real heart stopperdate: July 23, 2002 According to a survey just published by Japan's telecoms ministry, 3G handsets could be dangerous for those users who have been fitted with heart pacemakers. The survey report recommends that 3G phones should be kept at least 22 centimetres away from pacemakers and other medical equipment. This recommendation follows a series of guidelines that had been produced in 1997. The report recognises that radio interference in medical devices only occurs when 3G phones are less than 2 cm from them. This is a much shorter distance than conventional handsets. The Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecoms Ministry said that this was because the handsets generate fewer electronic waves. Irrespective of the fact the ministry recommended that a distance of 22 cm was reasonable. The ministry started studying the effects of radio waves on medical equipment in FY 2000.
